A New Shelf · For Adult Readers

Greyhaven Signals

Greyhaven Signals is the harbour city’s romance shelf: love stories for adult readers, set in the same city of proof as the Mysteries. A city can attest almost anything — a claim, a contract, a queue position fairly held. The one thing it cannot assign, prove, or file is the matter of the heart. These are the stories of the people who find that out.

01 — The Shelf

The same harbour,
after hours

Signals is an adults’ shelf, stated plainly: these are romances, written for grown readers, and they live on their own side of the harbour from Greyhaven Lamplight. Nothing here is needed for the Mysteries, and nothing here gives the Mysteries away.

Greyhaven runs on signals. The harbour speaks in lamps — lit, dimmed, answered across dark water. Its people have taken the habit indoors: what a person wants, and whether they want it, is something they signal — a colour worn at the wrist or the throat, green for yes, amber for not yet, red for no — set by the person themselves, and honoured without argument.

It is a clear system, and a fair one. It has only the one flaw every fair system in Greyhaven eventually meets: people. Signals get sent and not seen, seen and not believed, believed and not answered. The romances live in that weather.

“Love is the one thing the queue cannot assign.”

02 — The Book to Come

Queue for Two

The first Greyhaven Signals romance — in the works, and coming. No date is set; the board below is already open.

In Greyhaven, the scarce things are assigned by queue. First come, first served; urgent need, attested, moves first; and nobody — nobody — buys their place. It is the fairest system the city has, and this winter it has outdone itself: it has assigned the same live-work loft, over the same North Quay workshop, to two people at once.

One of them keeps the lists that keep the city fair. The other has spent a decade owing the system nothing, and likes it that way. The loft has two sleeping alcoves, one kitchen, and a rota to be negotiated like a treaty. The queue has decided they will share a winter. Everything after that, the queue cannot decide for them.

Forced Proximity Rivals to Lovers Grumpy–Sunshine

An open-door romance for adult readers — the Signals shelf is an adults’ shelf, and this book is written for them.

03 — The Personals

The Personals

From the public board at South Quay, copied up each Friday by the board’s keeper, exactly as posted. Crew wanted, housemates sought, witnesses, dance partners — and, everyone pretends otherwise, each other. These are the first residents of the Signals shelf, written as of the day their story opens.
